Nursing need of discharged patients after open heart surgery

Abstract
This study tried to provide a basis of education program for continued care of discharged patients through survey on the problems and needs of patients who experienced during convalescence period after open heart surgery.
Subjects were 69 patients who had open heart surgery due to congenital or acquired heart disorder, and ischemic heart disease and were within 18 weeks after discharge from one university hospital.
The data were collected through face to face interview with 12 categories open-questionnaires classified by Jaarsma¡¯s study.
Content analysis of the data and descriptive statistics using EXCELL were conducted.
The results were as follows.
Category having the highest need among 12 categories was about managing complications after surgery and specifically it were related to chest pain, shoulder pain and infection of suture area.
The second highest category was about recovery care and it was shown needs such as healing of surgical wound, symptom recurrence, and returning work.
Future expectation and supporter were shown as the lowest needs
As the above results, discharged patients who had open heart surgery had several nursing needs that they had to be taken follow-up care in according with recovery phase.
Therefore it is suggested that effective education program should be made from the finding of this study.
